San Diego, CA – Sen. Barack Obama’s address to the American Federation of Teachers, transmitted live via satellite to Chicago Sunday, was shot by Solana Productions, Inc., a video production company based in Solana Beach, CA.
Sen. Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, was in San Diego to discuss immigration and other issues important to Latino voters at the National Council of La Raza convention.
His 90-minute live message was watched by thousands of educators at the American Federation of Teachers’ convention in Chicago, where they immediately endorsed Obama for president. Clips from the speech were also carried on nationwide news broadcasts Sunday.
A four-person crew from Solana Productions, Inc., prepared lighting, video and audio requirements the day before the speech, and set up a TelePrompTer for Obama. The setup included a two-way talkback between the Chicago and San Diego so Obama could interact with attendees at the teachers’ convention. The actual message was transmitted from a hotel suite in downtown San Diego, where Obama stayed during the La Raza convention over the weekend.
During the speech, Obama remembered attending school in Chicago and hearing a lot about "those kids," a reference to children from under performing schools. He said a teacher pointed out to him that, "Those kids are, in fact, everyone's kids."
This was the second time Solana Productions was tapped for presidential campaign duties. In February, the company recorded a backstage interview with former presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton before her speech to thousands of supporters at San Diego State University. The interview was broadcast on TV’s “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider.”
